The Doomsday Sanction
After a pitstop for last week’s 150th episode, The Good Brothers return to wrap up the month of Match with another entry into the Justice League Unlimited Cadmus story-arc with “The Doomsday Sanction.” Join the hosts as they discuss a plot that redeems an underutilized Doomsday, who was originally featured on the Justice League episode “A Better World.” Hear the hosts discuss whether or not the return of this major tentpole character was justified, the tendency of the series producers to subvert expectations with some important characters, why Dr. Milo’s return seemed a bit out of place, why this episode could’ve flourished with a second part to it, and visuals that wow but are held back by the return of the terrible, no-good CGI. Plus a pair of musical cues that steal the show and another all-star voice cast that features some more fantastic work from multiple performers. The Good Brothers are back as they continue reviewing episodes of Justice League Unlimited with this week’s episode “For the Man Who Has Everything.” Our hosts discuss the original comic written by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons on which the episode is based, why this episode was the perfect follow up to the pilot that expanded the Justice League roster, Eric Roberts perfect portrayal of the slimy Mongul, how this compares to another dream-sequence DCAU episode, some really mind-blowing Easter Eggs in both voice acting and music and why Mongul would be #Cancelled if he was living in 2020. With just one week to go before the DCAU Review’s 100th episode, the Good Brothers wrap up their Superman Elseworlds month with a trip to Gotham City as seen on the Emmy-award winning series The Batman. Join our hosts as they discuss the role-reversal that The Dark Knight and Man of Steel take in this interpretation. Plus hear the brothers discuss what they felt to be an anti-climactic ending, the familiar voice-cast of some of the Elseworlds characters, why one host doesn’t care for one of the main characters’ designs and what this episode gets right when it comes to having a proper Superman theme. As the month of February draws to a close, our hosts are leaving the DCAU and kicking off our second annual Elseworlds month. This time the Good Brothers will be doing all Elseworlds Superman tales, and kicking things off with the brand new Superman: Red Son movie by Warner Brothers Animation, with executive producer Bruce Timm. There are plenty of ties to the DCAU as you’ll hear as the hosts break down some of the differences between the movie and source material, why some of the changes may work, while others leave character motivations questionable at best and why the complete changes left one host particularly sour. Additionally, the hosts discuss the beautiful animation, a well-executed Russian-sounding soundtrack, non-Russian actors speaking the length of the film in Russian accents, an exciting DCAU voice cameo and a recommendation for the listeners on whether to check out this film or not! The month of October is nearly over and with that, it’s almost time for the Good Brothers to turn over a new leaf and change DCAU shows. However, our hosts have one last episode of Superman: The Animated Series in 2019 and it’s a fun one. This week’s episode entitled “Heavy Metal” is the direct sequel to the very first episode the boys covered this month. This week’s discussion includes a favorable plot for introducing someone capable of aiding Superman against Metallo, some memories of the introduction of the Steel character, a soundtrack with similar tones to one of the hosts’ favorites, the question of how a metal helmet can show expression and a preview for the show being covered in the month of November. All of this, plus Liam broadcasts from inside the Steel suit and Cal acts as if it’s completely normal…on today’s episode of the DCAU Review!
The Good Brothers continue their stay in Metropolis with October’s penultimate review of Superman: The Animated Series. This week’s episode entitled “Fun and Games” features the series debut of Toyman and Cal & Liam discuss his DCAU interpretation compared to the Super Friends and DC Comics continuity versions. They also talk about the outstanding visual gags in this episode including deadly Play-Doh, knockout-gas filled bubbles and the giant robot rubber ducky! The hosts also talk Bud Court’s creepy/sinister performance as the main antagonist and offer a preview of next week’s episode review.
