Ep. 153 – BTAS – Mudslide

Continuing with another review of a classic Batman: The Animated Series cartoon, the Good Brothers continue in the second episode of the Clayface saga, titled “Mudslide.” The hosts talk a plot that has its ups and downs including an odd twist that ends up making Batman out to be a villain in the same vein as Ferris Boyle. Visuals steal the show however as a relatively unknown animation studio incorporates some elements of horror and old Hollywood lore to create an outstanding treat for the eyes. Cal and Liam also discuss another masterful score from the legendary Shirley Walker and a small but powerful voice cast that leans heavily on Batman and Alfred working on the main investigation and yet another great episode title card. Ep. 152 – BTAS – The Man Who Killed Batman

It’s not an April Fool’s joke, the month of April is here and that means the Good Brothers are on to another month of reviews, this time returning to Batman: The Animated Series picking up where they last left off with the production order and the episode “The Man Who Killed Batman.” Liam and Cal discuss this episode that usually ranks high on most people’s lists of top BTAS episodes of all time. Hear them discuss a plot out of the zany, dark-humored mind of Paul Dini with directing and partial storyboards by Bruce Timm that has almost no Batman screen time, another legendary voice performance by Mark Hamill that includes his favorite monologue of the series, and a scene that made one of the hosts jump out of their seat with excitement. Plus an organ-heavy soundtrack from Shirley Walker and a great story about Arleen Sorkin’s kazoo performance! Ep. 151 – JLU – The Doomsday Sanction

The Doomsday Sanction

After a pitstop for last week’s 150th episode, The Good Brothers return to wrap up the month of Match with another entry into the Justice League Unlimited Cadmus story-arc with “The Doomsday Sanction.” Join the hosts as they discuss a plot that redeems an underutilized Doomsday, who was originally featured on the Justice League episode “A Better World.” Hear the hosts discuss whether or not the return of this major tentpole character was justified, the tendency of the series producers to subvert expectations with some important characters, why Dr. Milo’s return seemed a bit out of place,  why this episode could’ve flourished with a second part to it, and visuals that wow but are held back by the return of the terrible, no-good CGI. Plus a pair of musical cues that steal the show and another all-star voice cast that features some more fantastic work from multiple performers. Breaking from the norm (because what even IS “normal” in 2020 am I right?), the Good Brothers are extending their stay in Gotham City by an extra week, and joining them to provide insight along the way is the man that directed this week’s episode (amongst many other Batman: The Animated Series classics), this week’s DCAU Review Special Correspondent, Mr. Kevin Altieri!

Ep. 134 – BTAS – I Am The Night

The Good Brothers are wrapping up the month of November with a review of Batman: The Animated Series episode “I Am The Night”, which tends to place high on most people’s “Best Of BTAS” lists. The hosts discuss a variety of topics including how this episode made it past standards and practices based on the very adult subject matter, why this episode wasn’t a favorite growing up, Batman in his feelings, animation that wasn’t the best, who the Jazzman best resembles, Batgirl foreshadowing and a sneaky retroactive Easter Egg from the very first episode of Batman Beyond. Ep. 133 – BTAS – What is Reality?

Batman has to battle the Riddler in a trippy VR sequence in an attempt to rescue Commisioner Gordon on this week’s review of the Batman: The Animated Series episode “What is Reality?” and the Good Brothers are up to the task. Cal and Liam go heavy on plot and visuals discussing yet another AKOM studios gaffe-filled production that includes what one host believes is the worst mistake they’ve ever seen in animation. They also break down one of the most fun sequences throughout the entire series as Batman fights Edward Nygma inside a video game and uncover some foreshadowing of the third Riddler episode.  Plus they discuss how everything in this episode is Robin’s fault, whether or not Edward’s scheme makes any sense, a debate on the effective use of music, and yet another legendary performance by the great John Glover as this week’s antagonist and how subtleties in his performance reveal some of the Riddler’s insecurities. Ep. 121 – Elseworlds – Night of The Batmen!

The fifth Saturday of August 2020 gives the Good Brothers a chance at reviewing an Elseworlds tale from Batman: The Brave and the Bold. This week’s episode titled “Night of The Batmen!” reveals what would happen if Batmen was put on the injured list for a time and a few other heroes had to cover for him. Cal & Liam briefly recap the origins of this lighter take on Batman and then talk about the incredibly earworm-y opening musical number, the various homages to different Batman designs, Aquaman’s buffoonish characterization, anfuncovering some of the legendary voice-actors portraying some of the heroes. Ep. 120 – BTAS – Terror in the Sky

Ep. 119 – BTAS – Day of The Samurai

The Good Brothers take a break from all of the sci-fi man-beasts for a good old-fashioned revenge tale. The culmination to the Batman/Ninja plot comes to an end as the hosts cover “Day of the Samurai”, the follow up to the Kyodai Ken saga that started in “Night of the Ninja.” The hosts discuss a variety including the sepia-toned bookends of the Wayne/Ken story, inconsistent animation that leads to some high highs and low lows. The hosts also discuss the cultural sensitivity for the Japanese culture being refreshing, the fantastic music and where this episode improved over the previous Ninja episode. Ep. 118 – BTAS – Moon of The Wolf

The unofficial Creature Feature month continues on the DCAU Review as the Good Brothers continue their month of Batman: The Animated Series coverage. This week our hosts review “Moon of the Wolf” which is based on a 1970s Neal Adams era Batman comic of the same title. Unfortunately for the hosts the comic seems to have been a bit more interesting as they quickly learn, due partly in fact to the return of Akom Production Co. as the team responsible for the animation. Other topics discussed include the lack of intelligence from each featured character, Bruce Wayne’s body dysmorphia, a soundtrack that introduces electric guitar for the first time to the DCAU soundtrack, speculation on the purpose of the cliffhanger ending, and a in-depth look at “Werewolfism.” Plus our hosts preview next week’s episode and highlight some connections from this episode to the larger DCAU continuity.

Ep. 82 – BTAS – Night Of The Ninja

Episode 82 is here and it finds the Good Brothers wrapping up their stay in the retro-futuristic Gotham City of Batman: The Animated Series. This week the boys review “Night of the Ninja”, a tale that sheds some light on Bruce Wayne’s past and part of how he trained to become the Batman. Our hosts discuss the choice to make Kyodai Ken’s motivation go beyond straight revenge, another reference to a Batman ’66 plot device, more fleshing out of the Robin character, why Bruce was needlessly secretive about the Ninja and the uncharacteristic respect paid to Japanese culture found in this cartoon compared to others at the time. Ep. 78 – BTAS – Eternal Youth & Perchance To Dream

The month of November is here, and Cal & Liam kickoff a month of Batman: The Animated Series reviews with a double feature! Never before have there been two polar opposite episodes featured on one podcast as the Good Brothers discuss the episodes “Eternal Youth” and “Perchance To Dream.” First, the brothers have what can only be described as shared disdain for a bizarre episode featuring #MyAlfred and the never before seen or heard from again Maggie. The brothers are fairly harsh in their criticism and comparison to a lost Batman ’66 episode but this episode does bring about the largest score disparity to date and for only the second time in DCAU Review history, a point deduction!

Up next the guys discuss one of the most universally loved episodes where we learn what it would be like if Bruce never put on the cape and cowl and instead lived solely as Bruce Wayne. Cal and Liam talk about some great subtleties in the soundtrack, the psychology of Batman’s ability to be happy and talk foreshadowing throughout the episode! The silver episode of the DCAU Review continues the Good Brothers’ exploration of the Elseworlds of Batman, as they celebrate Batman’s 80th birthday. This week they’re covering Batman: Under The Red Hood, the 2010 DVD release that adapts the Under The Hood storyline from the comics. The guys talk having the comic writer adapting his own story into animated form and whether that might have been a detriment to the animated feature. As last week’s crossover episode alluded to, the good brothers detail a very special crossover event in this week’s episode of the DCAU Review. Ep. 6 – BTAS – The Underdwellers & P.O.V.

It’s a super-sized Episode 6 of The DCAU Review! Cal & Liam discuss a pair of Batman:The Animated Series episodes on opposite ends of the scale when it comes to their scorecards. First up they cover an almost-universally despised episode 6, The Underdwellers. A controversial plot leaves the guys feeling uncomfortable and desperate to clean their palates with another episode. They then jump into covering one of the highest-scoring episodes to date, episode 7 entitled P.O.V. – an homage to the old Max Fleischer Superman cartoons of the 1940s and a story that relies heavily on non-Batman characters.
