Continuing with their theme episodes, Cal & Liam start on the road to Apokolips in this, their 13th episode. The brothers review Tools of the Trade, which lays the groundwork for some of the most intense episodes of Superman: The Animated Series, with the introduction of Jack Kirby’s Fourth World characters. While this episode deals more with what’s happening on Earth, it gives viewers a sneak peek at future mega-baddie Darkseid. The second reviewed episode, Father’s Day, introduces the audience to Darkseid’s son, Kalibak and give Cal & Liam a chance to discuss whether or not he’s a sympathetic character. The brothers discuss the normal categories as well as the #DumbKents, Darkseid’s cool heel bad guy, and a lack of musical themes for villains thus far compared to Batman: The Animated Series.
Ep. 12 – STAS – A Little Piece of Home & The Way of All Flesh
Episode 12 of the DCAU Review is finally here! This week’s episode is the brothers’ first themed episode, featuring a Lex Luthor and Kryptonite theme! Cal & Liam review A Little Piece of Home which introduces the only known element in the universe that can kill Superman, Kryptonite and then following this, they review The Way of All Flesh which features the series debut of the Kryptonite powered adversary, Metallo. The boys discuss the difference between Clancy Brown’s subtle Luthor versus Michael McDowell’s John Corbin/Metallo, how to effectively make Superman vulnerable, and more extreme violence against cartoon robots! All of this, plus Metallo puns and #CapeMovement on this week’s episode!
Ep. 11 – STAS – The Last Son of Krypton Parts I, II & III
Ep. 10 – BTAS – Two-Face Part I & II
The brothers Renner are back again this week with their milestone TENTH episode of The DCAU Review! This week’s episode marks a few firsts in the Batman: The Animated Series, including the first two-part episode of the series, and the tragic transformation of beloved district attorney Harvey Dent into the villainous Two-Face. Cal & Liam take some extra time to delve into some of the underlying themes of the stigma surrounding mental health issues, why using less Batman meant more to these episodes, some terrific animation and a PERFECT ten score for one voice actor’s performance. Ep. 9 – BTAS – Be A Clown
After a brief hiatus, the boys are back in town, picking up right where they left off with Batman: The Animated Series. Can there be such a thing as too much Joker? With his 4th appearance in the first nine episodes of the DCAU Review, Mark Hamill’s Joker stars once again in this week’s episode, Be A Clown, putting that very question to the test. Cal & Liam discuss the bizarre character design for Mayor Hill’s son, whether the lack of soundtrack hurts or helps, more inconsistent animation and Batman’s lines being exclusively puns. Ep. 6 – BTAS – The Underdwellers & P.O.V.
It’s a super-sized Episode 6 of The DCAU Review! Cal & Liam discuss a pair of Batman:The Animated Series episodes on opposite ends of the scale when it comes to their scorecards. First up they cover an almost-universally despised episode 6, The Underdwellers. A controversial plot leaves the guys feeling uncomfortable and desperate to clean their palates with another episode. They then jump into covering one of the highest-scoring episodes to date, episode 7 entitled P.O.V. – an homage to the old Max Fleischer Superman cartoons of the 1940s and a story that relies heavily on non-Batman characters. Ep. 5 – BTAS – Pretty Poison
Cal & Liam are back with Episode 5 of The DCAU Review! This week, they’re talking Pretty Poison, which marks the series’ first appearance of Pamela Isley, aka Poison Ivy.
